There are four basic types of metal for rings: Sterling Silver or Gold in Rose, White, and Yellow variations. Gold is measured in a unit called Karats. This is split into 24 equal parts, meaning 24 karat (24k) gold is pure gold: 24 out of 24 parts gold. Pure gold, however, is too soft for jewelry use, and would bend too easily in everyday wear.
In general, gold is combined with other metals to increase the strength & appearance of the metal. 10k, 14k, and 18k gold are the most popular variants. At Diamonite Moissanite Jewellery, our standard gold engagement rings are typically made with 14k gold.
Sterling Silver
Sterling silver is a beautiful & versatile metal that can work seamlessly on any outfit. Not only is it durable & wonderfully hypo-allergenic, it also has a stylistic all-around look. Another popular option in terms of affordability is gold plated sterling silver so that you can have your cherished piece in the gold tone that you desire.
Yellow Gold
Yellow gold is a classic and is achieved through the addition of silver, copper, and zinc. It is considered to be a timeless style and is very easy to maintain.
White Gold
White gold is a versatile metal that gets its whiteness from its alloys and plating.
Rose Gold
Rose gold is a modern and romantic choice. It gains its stunning red colour from the copper alloy and is incredibly easy to maintain.
Platinum
Platinum is a very white metal that is very durable and is stronger than gold. It is also more expensive and is known for its hypoallergenic properties.
Rhodium Plating
To get a bright white finish, both platinum and white gold need Rhodium Plating. This procedure is required to be applied once the ring is made and will need to be reapplied several months later.
One benefit of platinum is that it will make it harder to tell if the rhodium has worn off – this means that it will not require re-plated as often as white gold.
STYLE
It is also important to consider the various characteristics and maintenance requirements of each metal type. However, it is also important to make sure that the ring fits seamlessly with their style.
Two Tone
This method works by using either a rose or yellow gold band or a white gold claw ring. The band and the claws are then combined with a gold or rose gold stone.
